Board works with MASB consultant on norms, SOPs and succession planning

At a midday governance session, MASB representative Deb Macon led the board in adopting a process for revisiting group norms, recommended creating Board SOPs with quarterly reviews and suggested succession-planning conversations and an MASB president workshop on Oct. 12.
The board met with Deb Macon from the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) to discuss board norms, standard operating procedures and succession planning. Macon led an activity using the Norms of Collaboration framework and advised the board to revisit the norms regularly and follow a research-based approach when requesting changes.
MASB recommended creating Board of Education SOPs, holding quarterly reviews and forming an ad hoc subcommittee to draft procedures for full-board adoption. Macon emphasized that policies should be established before procedures and that proposed SOP changes be evidence-based.
On succession planning, MASB urged proactive conversations about interest in board leadership roles in October'December ahead of the January organizational meeting and promoted an MASB President Workshop scheduled for Oct. 12 that board members may attend.
