Pathways High School spotlight: board hears that program’s flexibility helps students and student reps press bond, cleanliness and AP sequencing concerns

Director Jared Herron presented a Pathways High School spotlight at the Kenowa Hills Board of Education meeting Oct. 23, saying the program’s flexibility supports students who struggle in traditional high school settings, including those with social anxiety or whose grades suffered during the COVID pandemic.
Herron described Pathways’ core values as a family atmosphere, modeling a workplace environment and embracing a strong work ethic. The presentation included demographic and graduation-rate information and emphasized the quality of virtual instruction and the district team that supports Pathways students.
During student representative reports, Student Representative Jake Jonker said some high-school students worry that the newly proposed bond does not address infrastructure needs at the high school and also raised concerns about building cleanliness. Jonker suggested that Advanced Placement sequencing might be improved by offering AP Government before AP U.S. History to better introduce students to AP rigor. Student Representative Ronan Jameyson also participated in the report and noted growth in club offerings and the start of winter sports.
No board action on Pathways programming or on the bond was taken during the meeting; student concerns were recorded and will be referred to district administration for follow-up as appropriate.
