Owner says he will install independent meters after sewer commission flags high flow at 130 Middlesex

Kathy, a sewer department staff member, told the Kingsborough Sewer Commission that fiscal-year readings for 130 Middlesex and its adjoining plaza show an average flow of 3,592 gallons per day, about 952 gpd above the 2,640-gpd allotment and roughly equivalent to three extra ERUs. "They're currently doing 3,592 gallons a day. They were allotted 2,640," Kathy said.

The overage persisted even after the commission arranged a special two‑week meter reading following repairs to leaking toilets. The department sent the property owner a certified letter and asked him to appear before the commission to explain the discrepancy.

The property owner, who identified himself at the meeting, said he has contracted two plumbing firms to install independent meters on the two commercial units using significant water—Maeve’s and the Thai restaurant often referenced as Casadores—and to provide independent verification of usage. "I'm doing what I can to investigate it and hopefully, you know, solve the problem, but I don't have the answer right now," he said.

Commission members and staff reviewed the May 18–June 1 special reading and advised the owner to contact the water district to confirm historical meter locations and calibration records. Commission members flagged that the increase in usage coincided with the opening of a new restaurant at the plaza and urged the owner to focus the independent-metering work on that part of the system.

The owner said he will return with findings; the commission asked for an update at its next meeting scheduled for Aug. 13. Staff confirmed the certified letter to the owner was sent on June 15.

The discussion did not include any enforcement vote; the commission directed staff and the property owner to gather independent meter evidence and water-district validation before considering further action.
