Highway official reports Transfer Station problems; Select Board directs weekly hauling and a tarp solution

Mike Kenison delivered the highway update at the Town of Jefferson Select Board meeting on Sept. 15, reporting that Transfer Station concrete-wall repairs are scheduled for the end of September and that the roof will have to come off for the work, creating a need to cover the cardboard container.
"The roof will have to come off so they will need covering for the cardboard container," Kenison said, adding the town has seen increased construction debris because the construction dumpster isn't being emptied on time. The Select Board asked Amanda Simino to contact Great North Woods Container and establish a regular weekly hauling schedule to prevent overfilling.
Kenison also said another railroad crossing will be paved in October and noted a preliminary winter-sand price of $12.90 per ton; the board said it would decide on sand procurement after receiving a written quote. He raised concerns about his hours, explaining that since he has been working alone there are times when he exceeds his regular 35 hours. The board said part-time highway employees Luc Couture and Larry Wells could be called for help, authorized occasional 40-hour weeks with prior notice, and reiterated part-time employees are limited to 35 hours.
Selectman Norman Brown suggested obtaining a tarp with a crank so Transfer Station attendants can more easily cover and uncover containers. No formal vote on capital expense for a tarp was recorded; the board asked staff to return with quotes and a recommended procurement plan.
