Select Board reviews options to accept library grant for back entrance

The Jefferson Select Board on Sept. 2 reviewed legal and accounting guidance on how the town may accept a grant awarded to the library for construction of a back entrance.
Administrative Assistant Amanda Simino presented e‑mails from the town auditor and town attorney explaining two options: if the project will not start until next year, the town should appropriate the funds as capital outlay and record estimated grant revenue; if the project begins this year, the funds would be handled as unanticipated funds. Both advisers told staff that the Select Board may accept the grant on behalf of the town. Simino also told the board that a public hearing is not required to accept the funds because the grant amount is less than $10,000.
Select Board members agreed to proceed on that basis and asked town staff to follow the attorney’s recommended language and accounting treatment depending on the project schedule. No formal vote to accept the grant was recorded at the meeting; staff will proceed with the paperwork once the board signs the appropriate documents and confirms timing.
The guidance gives the board a clear administrative path for receiving the library grant while preserving the appropriate accounting treatment for the town financial records.
