Taos Ski Valley planners review draft event-permit and overnight-camping ordinances amid summer-tourism concerns

Taos Ski Valley, N.M. — The Planning & Zoning Commission on March 3 reviewed two draft ordinances aimed at regulating village events and overnight camping as summer tourism increases.
The proposed Ordinance 2025-001 would require an event permit, establish permit fees, set conditions for approval and penalties for violations, and repeal Ordinance 10-35. Village Administrator Rick Bellis asked Commissioners for feedback; Commissioner Scott Hall requested that the ordinance’s language on controlled substances be cross-checked against the State Controlled Substances Act and the State Cannabis Act to ensure consistency with state law.
Separately, draft Ordinance 2025-002 would prohibit overnight parking or camping on municipal property, parks, trails, easements, rights-of-way and municipal parking lots while providing exceptions and a permit mechanism. Bellis said requiring permits would help the village Department of Public Safety locate individuals quickly in case of emergency. He also reported the village has met with Taos Ski Valley, Inc. (TSVI), the Taos Land & Cattle Association and the U.S. Forest Service to discuss the proposal.
Commissioners asked staff to review statutory cross-references and return with recommended edits and legal comparisons at a future meeting.
