Committee begins phased review of historic items in courthouse crawlspace

The Oneida County Facilities Committee on June 8 discussed the removal and inventory of historic items stored in the courthouse crawlspace. Troy Huber reported that "approximately 75 additional boxes remain in the crawlspace," with more material in the Buildings & Grounds office. Administrative Coordinator Tracy Hartman said she has not yet had time to review the items and reminded the committee that, under state law, the historical society must review any items older than 20 years before the county can destroy or give them away.
Committee members expressed concern about the time staff are spending on the review. Chairman Russ Fisher instructed staff not to bring additional items up from the crawlspace until the current items in the office have been processed and said the committee will keep the item on future agendas until the work is complete. Committee member Robert Almekinder specifically noted concern that the inventory process is taking significant employee time.
The committee agreed the items should be reviewed in sections to manage staff workload and compliance with the historical review requirement. The committee did not take further formal action at the meeting; the item will return to a future agenda.
