Cheltenham Township’s public safety committee voted to recommend that the board of commissioners adopt resolutions honoring long-serving personnel: Police Chief John P. Slavenge on his retirement after 37 years of service and Kevin Feener for 50 years of volunteer service to the Elkies Park Fire Company.
Chair read the resolution honoring Chief Slavenge and asked for comments; commissioners praised Slavenge’s career and the chief thanked the board for support and friendship during his tenure. “To have spent 37 years here … it’s amazing to me,” Chief Slavenge said, reflecting on his time leading the department he helped build.
The committee also recommended a resolution honoring Kevin Feener for five decades of volunteer service and leadership in the Elkies Park Fire Company. Speakers noted Feener has held administrative and operational roles over many years and continues to respond to fires and attend training.
Why it matters: The resolutions are ceremonial but recognize years of service by a department head and a long-serving volunteer firefighter, marking institutional continuity and community contribution. The committee approved both items and will forward the resolutions to the full board of commissioners for formal adoption at the July 15 meeting according to the agenda language.
