The Medford School Committee unanimously voted to approve an updated Chapter 74 viability form for the new Medford High School project and authorized staff to submit the document to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA).
Dr. Glosi, who walked the committee through the edits, said the MSBA requested more current enrollment and wait-list information and clarifications on the timing of planned career/technical programs. "They asked us to update this form, which we have done now, and noted that anytime that we change this form, they do require a vote of this committee," Dr. Glosi said.
The updated form reflects current enrollment for the 2024–25 school year and adds or clarifies four programs tied to the high school project: plumbing and information systems, which staff said will begin next year and are fully enrolled, and dental assisting and criminal justice/protective services, which staff tied to the new building's occupancy projected for the 2030–31 school year. Staff emphasized that timing is subject to change and that they will amend the form if projected occupancy shifts.
Committee members moved and seconded the approval (the chair announced Member Graham as mover and Member Rheinfeld as seconder). Clerk-conducted roll call recorded affirmative votes from Member Graham, Member Mastroboni, Member Olapati, Member Parks, Member Riento, Member Russo and Mayor Lungo Kern; the chair announced "7 in the affirmative, 0 in the negative." The committee then adjourned.
The update is procedural: it revises enrollment counts, wait-list figures and the schedule for launching the listed Chapter 74 programs so the district's application materials to the MSBA reflect current plans for program offerings tied to the new high school. Staff said they expect to present any future timing changes to the committee for additional updates before re-submitting the form to the MSBA.
