Council approves continuation of archery deer-management pilot after successful season

Peachtree City staff reported that the 2025–26 deer-management pilot met herd-control objectives: staff said 16 deer were harvested (15 does, 1 buck), aligning with wildlife-consultant expectations and producing operational lessons for scaling. Staff recommended continuing the program in 2026–27, expanding zones where safe and appropriate, and opening the application/lottery process.
Council members supported continuation and urged several operational refinements: opening the full season to increase harvest opportunity, exploring city-issued tags so harvests do not count against hunters’ state tag limits as an incentive, creating a registry or facilitated matches between property owners and qualified hunters on private lots, and reviewing additional green-belt locations that could be safely used for hunts adjacent to large properties.
Councilmember moved and the council voted by voice to approve agenda item 7-26-01 to continue the archery deer-management program for the 2026–27 season (09/12/2026–01/31/2027). Staff said they will coordinate with Georgia Wildlife for season dates, open applications, and work with processors to handle harvested animals.
