The Jay County Commissioners held a special session April 18 and voted to terminate Jail Commander Darin Sanderson effective immediately.
Chairman Chad Aker said the commissioners had been made aware that Sanderson was in violation of county personnel policy and noted the Indiana State Police are conducting an investigation; the board stated it would make no further comment while the investigation is pending. The motion to terminate was made by Commissioner Rex Journay, seconded by Commissioner Brian McGalliard, and passed unanimously in the special session at 9:15 a.m. Sheriff Larry Newton and Chief Deputy Ben Schwartz were present for the meeting.
Prior to the special session the board held an executive session on April 18 to discuss a personnel matter (IC 5-14-1.5-6.1(b)(6)). The minutes record no additional detail about the alleged personnel-policy violation and instruct that the board will not discuss the matter further while the state police investigation proceeds.
