Jay County commissioners terminate jail commander amid state police investigation

The motion to terminate was made by Commissioner Rex Journay, seconded by Commissioner Brian McGalliard, and passed unanimously in the special session at 9:15 a.m. Sheriff Larry Newton and Chief Deputy Ben Schwartz were present for the meeting.
Prior to the special session the board held an executive session on April 18 to discuss a personnel matter (IC 5-14-1.5-6.1(b)(6)). The minutes record no additional detail about the alleged personnel-policy violation and instruct that the board will not discuss the matter further while the state police investigation proceeds.
