IU Health donates building for recovery residence; coalition begins feasibility study

Representatives of the Jay County Drug Prevention Coalition told commissioners that IU Health donated a building at Craiger and Votaw in Portland for use as a recovery residence. Ally Raines said a closing and possession date was set for June 12, 2024; the coalition will begin cleanup and a feasibility study and plans to work with outside contractors on renovation and program design.
Raines said the community submitted about 200 name suggestions for the facility and that only one negative comment had been received so far. She estimated the men-only facility could house roughly 15–17 residents but said a final capacity number will be determined by the feasibility study. The coalition applied for a Building Communities of Recovery grant and expects award notifications in August, with funds arriving in October; if funded, the coalition aims for a July opening next year.
Commissioners heard the plan and counsel that the coalition will return with results of the feasibility study and any grant outcomes for further county consideration.
