Central Elementary spotlights early-reading screening as teachers pursue LETRS training

Central Elementary School staff presented the school’s approach to early detection of students needing additional reading support during the Kenowa Hills Board of Education meeting on Feb. 24.
Principal Horner, Instructional Coach Jamel Debri, and Reading Interventionist Cindy Pikaart described schoolwide screening practices intended to identify learners who need extra reading interventions. The presenters said that elementary teachers and elementary administrators have attended or are attending LETRS training as part of district professional development aimed at strengthening early literacy instruction.
Student Representative Mya Gray reported that nine Pathways students have already met graduation requirements and four more are nearing completion; she also noted that seven students are attending the M-TEC program at Grand Rapids Community College. Student Representative Chay'ce Smith said spring athletics will begin soon and mentioned plans for the next high-school publication to highlight Central Elementary.
The superintendent previewed that schools-of-choice items would be considered later in the meeting. The board had no public comments at this meeting.
