Cimarron council hires two public-works employees, tables raises

CIMARRON — The Village of Cimarron council voted Sept. 11 to hire two public-works employees and postponed pay raises for current staff.
Mayor Eloy Brazil read the results after the council returned from an executive session held under the New Mexico Open Meetings Act. Councilor Colin Tawney moved to hire Ted Salazar at $20 an hour; Councilor Ernie LeDoux seconded. The motion passed 2-1 with Mayor Pro Tem Valorie Garcia casting the lone dissenting vote. The council then approved hiring Leo Coca for $16 an hour on a unanimous 3-0 vote.
The hires followed an executive session called to discuss limited personnel matters. After the council returned to open session at 7:16 p.m., Mayor Brazil reported that the discussion had been limited to agenda items and that no decisions were made in executive session; the council nevertheless took votes on hiring once back in public session.
Mayor Brazil had recommended raises for two existing public-works employees — raising Joseph Martinez to $21 an hour and Danny Martinez to $22 an hour — but Councilor Ernie LeDoux moved to table the raises until the next meeting. The motion to table passed 3-0. Councilors said the raises were contingent on the new hire accepting his position.
The council recorded roll-call votes where specified: on the hire of Ted Salazar the roll call showed Councilor Colin Tawney and Councilor Ernie LeDoux voting yes and Mayor Pro Tem Valorie Garcia voting no.
The meeting closed with a request from Mayor Pro Tem Valorie Garcia to schedule a workshop on the pay plan and personnel policy and to review the purchasing policy at a future meeting.
