Thomasville city officials on May 19 accepted an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and housing box donated through a Davidson County EMS grant.
Sam Olshinski, Chief of Emergency Management, introduced representatives from Duke University and Davidson County EMS. Lisa Monk of Duke emphasized the importance of rapid response in cardiac arrest cases, noting in the council meeting that "less than 10 percent of the 350,000 annual cardiac arrest cases survive without these timely interventions." Amanda McKnight of Davidson County EMS described mapping methods used to identify gaps in AED coverage and recommended Main Street near City Hall or the Bandstand as an optimal public location because of business access and foot traffic.
Council Member Hunter Thrift moved to accept the donation; Mayor Pro Tem Doug Hunt seconded and the motion was approved 6-0. Staff said the placement will consider accessibility for the public and first responders and will be coordinated with local fire and EMS personnel.
