Stephens City Town Council handled a series of routine but formal items on Jan. 6, approving volunteer fire company officer selections, adopting a resolution of appreciation, approving committee minutes and hearing a mayoral announcement.
Fire Chief T. J. Vaught reported a roughly 4% year-over-year increase in call volume and presented the SCVFD's operational officer selections for 2026, including two new assistant safety officers. Councilwoman Regina Swygert-Smith moved to approve the selections; the motion carried on a roll-call vote with five Ayes and one absence.
The clerk read a Resolution of Appreciation for Ray Ewing and Councilwoman Tina Stevens moved its adoption; the resolution passed on a roll-call vote.
The council approved minutes from the Finance Committee and the Newtown Heritage Festival Committee after a motion by Councilman P. Fravel. The Newtown committee reported plans for music, ribs, craft beer and a kids zone for the festival.
Mayor Michael A. Diaz announced he is not seeking re-election and thanked council members for their service; he noted that terms for Councilmembers Pete Fravel, Regina Swygert-Smith and Butch Fravel are expiring in June and that decisions about running must be made by June.
Vice-Mayor Fravel moved to adjourn at 6:45 p.m.; the motion carried and the council adjourned.
