Oak Grove board backs Missouri 'Blue Shield' public-safety resolution

Oak Grove’s Police Chief described the Missouri Blue Shield designation and asked the Board of Alderwomen to adopt a resolution supporting the city’s application.

The chief told the board the Blue Shield program (referenced in executive order 25-03) recognizes and supports local law enforcement efforts to enhance public safety and community partnerships. He said the designation does not dictate policing tactics or guarantee grant funding but does require annual reporting to the Department of Public Safety about local efforts, which some cities of comparable size do not already produce.

"They're not going to dictate how you do something," the chief said, "but they are going to dictate that you report the endeavors that you undertake, which would be something new for us." He added the city already follows many practices (recruiting/retention policy via Lexipol, partnerships, grant activity), and the resolution is a first step to apply for the designation.

A board member moved to approve a resolution in support of the Missouri Blue Shield program application; a second was recorded and the motion passed by voice vote. The resolution was assigned number 25-05.

Why it matters: The designation could position Oak Grove to document and publicize its public-safety initiatives; it is a preliminary step that may be necessary for some competitive grant applications but does not itself guarantee funding.

Next steps: Staff will complete the application and submit the annual report required by the program as part of follow-up obligations if the designation is pursued.
