Valley County to apply for ITD Highway Safety grant after year-end report shows $1M+ in awards

Grant Writer Ken Schlegel told the Valley County Board on Nov. 3 that the county had secured more than $1 million in grant awards over the past year and outlined priorities for the coming year, including purchase of dedicated grant-management software, targeted capital projects and essential 911 system equipment.
Schlegel requested authorization to apply for the Idaho Transportation Department Office of Highway Safety Fiscal Year 2026 grant. Commissioners asked how the funds could be spent; Schlegel described eligible uses related to traffic enforcement and public-safety equipment. Commissioner Katlin Caldwell moved to authorize the application; Commissioner Neal Thompson seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
In his year-end summary, Schlegel said the county will prioritize grant funding for Community Center improvements, fairgrounds building repairs and upgrades, and critical 911 infrastructure. He also recommended investing in grant-management software and program implementation support to improve operational efficiency and long-term compliance.
The commission did not commit county matching funds at the Nov. 3 meeting; Schlegel noted priorities and said staff would return with specifics if required by grant solicitations. The board's authorization allows county staff to submit the ITD application for FY26.
