Martin County approves $70,000 fiber upgrade and budget amendment

Martin County commissioners approved a capital project and a $70,000 budget amendment March 14 to fund fiber upgrades to three county buildings, including the Old Agriculture Building (new Emergency Operations Center), the Department of Social Services office and the Ray Street transit building.
County Manager David Bone described productivity and resiliency concerns driving the request — the Old Agriculture Building previously ran on a 35 mbps link and the EOC relocation increased demand. Staff provided four quotes for trenching and fiber installation and recommended completing the work as a single project to avoid cost escalation. Finance Director Cindy Ange said the requested $70,000 would be taken from appropriated fund balance and added to the Data Processing account via Budget Amendment #31.
The board approved the capital project and unanimously adopted the budget amendment. The minutes note the fiber project also included running copper conduits to prepare for a future voice-over-IP telephone upgrade and that grant funding had been sought for one of the sites as part of a transit grant proposal.
