Appling County updates: sheriff staffing, recreation participation, road repairs and $100,000 Craven Road work

Appling County officials provided updates on public safety, recreation and roads at meetings April 5 and April 27, and the board approved roughly $100,000 for Craven Road repairs at the April 27 called meeting.
Sheriff Mark Melton reported that Dusty Davis is the department’s newest deputy after completing the police academy; Melton said he has sent 13 employees to the academy, 11 of whom completed it, and that the department continues to have vacancies in school resource officers, patrol and investigations. Melton also said the county’s law enforcement expo on April 1 drew about 1,100–1,200 people and 54 agencies and vendors.
Recreation Director Wilton McCall gave a spring programs update: T-ball, baseball and softball signups are complete and games began March 29, and a local track meet on April 7 had roughly 200 participants with top finishers advancing to district competition. McCall reported total participation across coaches, participants and volunteers at 737 and said the new pool is roughly 75% complete, with the enclosure work ongoing and projected completion in late April or early May.
Roads Superintendent Brooks Johnson said the department is dealing with thefts of stop signs, reported 147 'beaver tails' turned in since the last meeting, and noted increasing rock prices and supply constraints due to labor shortages and recent high-wind weather. On April 27 the commission approved deep patching and double surface treatment for Craven Road at an estimated cost of approximately $100,000 to be paid from TIA funds under the existing contract; Commissioner Sarah Boatright moved for the repair and Commissioner Charlie Leggett seconded the motion, which carried unanimously.
Interim County Manager Mike Deal and Interim County Manager Hayden Rozier also reported that the landfill scored 95 out of 100 on an EPD inspection and announced local community events including a library ribbon-cutting and a Crime Victims Memorial event.
The board held executive sessions on personnel during the called meetings and reported no action taken from those sessions.
