Sherburn council authorizes facility assessment of city buildings

The Sherburn City Council voted to authorize a consultant-led facility assessment of three municipal buildings after staff warned of mounting repair needs and an aging heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system at the Community Hall Theater.
City Clerk said the consultant proposal is a fixed price split into two phases: “Phase 1 consists of an on-site investigation, for a total of $2,636, and ... phase 2 is $4,518. Total comes to $7,154.” The presentation noted the theater’s HVAC unit was installed in 2004 and that a full replacement had been previously quoted at about $48,000.
Council members discussed whether to proceed this year or budget the work for next year and confirmed that the city has previously set aside funds for Community Hall repairs. Council member S5 moved to proceed with phases 1 and 2 of the assessment and a colleague seconded the motion; the measure passed.
The council record shows the assessment total given in the consultant packet as $7,154 but the vote transcript references $7,104 during the motion. Staff will proceed with the assessment using the consultant proposal and will return with documented findings, photos and budgetary cost estimates that break repairs down into near-term and longer-term intervals.
Next steps: staff will schedule the consultant’s on-site work and bring the assessment report and cost recommendations back to council for prioritization and budgeting.
