MAPC legislative update flags Municipal Empowerment Act; executive committee approves consent agenda

The MAPC legislative committee reported active fall activity at the State House and urged members to watch for a hearing on the Municipal Empowerment Act, while the executive committee concluded business and approved the consent agenda on Sept. 17.
Keith Bergman, chair of the legislative committee, said the committee has been active at hearings and introduced Leah to outline legislative work. Leah told the committee that “50 bills have been heard, of the 83 that MAPC has endorsed,” and urged members to be prepared to support technical changes to strengthen municipal procurement and other provisions.
Leah highlighted that MAPC staff have submitted letters and provided testimony in recent hearings, and she flagged the Municipal Empowerment Act as a technical but impactful bill that will come before the joint committee on municipalities.
On procedural business, President Erin Ortman called for a motion to approve the consent agenda and adjourn. A motion to approve was made by Moe and seconded by John De Priest. The chair conducted a roll-call vote; the motion carried with a majority voting aye and the meeting adjourned at 12:37 p.m.
Next steps: MAPC staff said they may circulate opportunities for members to support the Municipal Empowerment Act and asked members to register for the MARPA conference on Oct. 7.
