School committee ratifies labor agreements, approves energy grants and several new positions

The board also approved a suite of centrally funded roles intended to bolster special-education compliance and classroom coaching.
Why it matters: The labor agreements restore negotiated workplace terms for frontline school staff; the energy grants — a $2.6 million Department of Energy Resources award and an $8.7 million contribution from Eversource — together support a multi-school effort to upgrade ventilation and heating systems. “It’s a massive undertaking, well worth it,” the superintendent said of the energy projects, urging members that the investments will reduce future maintenance while improving building comfort for students and staff. CFO Patrick Roche told the committee the district submitted a single TES application that combined state funds and partner contributions, which together approach $11.4 million for the projects.
The motions passed largely on unanimous roll-call votes with several absences recorded in the minutes. Several members thanked staff and unions for reaching agreements and emphasized implementation and communication with families and staff as next steps.
The committee moved on to informational items including a vendor transition for school meals and recognition of the communications team’s national awards.
