Board member urges more public 'discernment' as Merton board discusses trust and the strategic plan

At the Sept. 30 meeting, board members spent substantial time discussing trust between the board, administration and the community and how the strategic plan should be explained. One board member (speaker 5) said the board should do more public "discernment"—longer, explanatory discussion in meetings—so the community understands the reasons behind votes and decisions.
"Trust doesn't make everybody happy. It's what you do to make everyone informed," the board member said, arguing that giving context about why the board takes positions helps the community anticipate future resource requests and decisions. The speaker referenced a recent strategic-plan vote that passed 3–2 and said a lack of public explanation for dissenting votes undermined community confidence.
Other members said discussions and preparation occur prior to meetings through administrative briefings, and one member said they work with staff in advance so they can vote knowledgeably. A separate board member said some items appear to be arranged before meetings—citing an annual-meeting chair nomination that seemed to have been agreed on in advance—as an example that erodes trust.
Participants agreed to continue surveying staff and community and to schedule additional engagement (including a planned school-perception survey and possible principal reports and student showcases) to improve transparency. The board did not take formal action on governance changes at the meeting; members said they will continue conversations and bring related items back to future agendas.
