The Hanover Township School District’s curriculum and technology committee reported discussion of a proposal to adopt insurance for student Chromebooks, a program the committee called the “Hanover Halo” proposal. The committee said the District spent approximately $50,000 last year repairing damaged Chromebooks.
Michelle Stragiola, reporting the committee’s discussion, said the proposal was presented by the district’s director of technology and would aim to reduce unexpected repair costs, set device-care expectations, and align the district with neighboring districts that already offer similar protections. “The District had spent approximately $50,000 last year to repair Chromebook damage,” Stragiola said while summarizing the committee discussion.
Committee members reviewed how neighboring districts implemented similar programs and asked questions about program design and family cost-sharing. The report noted the committee will refer the Hanover Halo proposal to the policy committee for additional questions and for consideration of how device-insurance would interact with existing policies, including acceptable-use and device-provision policies.
The committee also discussed that, historically, the district has not charged families for any Chromebook damage and that introducing an insurance or cost-sharing program would represent a procedural change in how device repairs are funded.
Next steps stated in the report include a review by the policy committee and additional details to be presented at a future board meeting before any formal adoption or contract with a vendor.
