Crisfield council approves application for roughly $7.5 million to upgrade wastewater plant

Crisfield leaders authorized staff to apply for state funding to upgrade an aging wastewater treatment plant after a presentation on plant deficiencies and recurring emergency repairs.
City staff asked council to approve an application to the Maryland Department of the Environment for approximately $7,500,000 to replace obsolete pumps and other major components at the treatment plant. The presenter said the plant has current MDE violations and recurring emergency repairs because parts are old and replacement parts must sometimes be custom-made. “This grant would be to get that situation so that everything was functioning properly,” Jennifer said, adding the application will be submitted through MDE’s State Revolving Fund and its new E&R (equipment renewal) program; staff said MDE will later determine which portion (if any) is loan and which portion is grant.
Moonshot will help prepare the application. Staff described the largest items in the request as the inflow pump station, main lift station pumps (some dating from the 1980s) and other major components that are roughly 20 years old. Council moved and the application was approved by voice vote. Staff said they will provide details on which portions (grant vs. loan) MDE allocates if and when that information is available.
What happens next: staff will finalize and submit the application ahead of the Jan. 31 deadline and will report back with MDE’s funding determination when received.
