The St. Charles County Council voted July 13 to amend county ordinance and remove the annual renewal requirement for the senior citizen real estate property tax relief program (Bill 5,501).
Erica Bridges, a candidate for collector of revenue, spoke in support of the bill during public comment, calling the change a "simple common sense improvement" that would reduce burdens on seniors and county staff. "Eliminating the annual renewal requirement alleviates unnecessary burdens on our seniors and county staff," she said.
Michelle (the county collector, who spoke to the council) summarized the proposal's intent: once a qualifying senior is enrolled, the credit remains at that address until the owner moves, as required by state law, removing the need for a yearly renewal. The council amended the agenda to move the bill forward and then approved Bill 5,501 by roll call; the transcript records unanimous affirmative votes in the roll call sequence recorded at the meeting.
County staff described the change as an administrative improvement following the program's first years of operation and referenced an emergency measure the council adopted earlier to extend application deadlines after vendor issues. The ordinance removes the renewal step but retains state-law requirements tied to address changes and eligibility.
