Commissioners and city staff discussed safety and access concerns stemming from recent traffic changes on Hoffner Avenue during the April 21 meeting.
Commissioner Ed Gold said the current configuration restricts left-turn access into Belle Isle Commons, forcing drivers to travel farther, make U-turns and return, which could reduce patronage of the plaza and create safety concerns on an alternative access route. Commissioner Bobby Lance asked about the feasibility of requesting a traffic signal at the Wallace intersection to address concerns about visibility and safety.
Chief Grimm explained that portions of Hoffner Avenue are maintained by Orange County and that any designation or changes on County-controlled segments would require County approval; the City may designate its portion for golf-cart use but cannot unilaterally change County-controlled segments. Grimm recommended bringing the item back to a future agenda so Council can provide direction and staff can finalize the City's golf-cart informational brochure. He also reminded the Council that golf cart operation must comply with licensing and vehicle requirements.
The minutes record no formal directive or vote on traffic-signal requests or golf-cart designation; staff said a prior study had evaluated improvements including a traffic signal and school zone options, and that study results would inform next steps.
