Cookeville ' The Cookeville City Council voted June 18 to authorize the city manager to accept a Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) proposal to build a dedicated right-turn lane on South Willow Avenue at Interstate Drive.
Mr. Ward told the council the project grew from a TDOT statewide partnership program and that TDOT prepared design plans. "Council committed to contributing up to $500,000 to construct this project and get the project moving forward," Mr. Ward said, adding that TDOT prepared the design and that the city would be responsible for relocating utilities, dedicating any necessary right-of-way and maintaining city facilities that are part of the work.
Why it matters: The lane aims to improve traffic flow at a busy intersection where right-turn volumes cause queuing onto the interstate off-ramp, according to staff. The partnership program spreads construction responsibility between the state and the city, with the city providing utility relocations and right-of-way dedications.
Council action: The presiding officer called for a motion; the resolution authorizing the city manager to sign TDOT's proposal passed on a recorded vote of 5-0.
