Council renews $54,773 VOCA grant to support victim services coordinator

Cookeville City Council on May 21 approved renewal of a Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grant administered by the Office of Criminal Justice Programs for fiscal year 2027 in the amount of $54,773 to support the city’s victim services coordinator.
A city staff member told the council the VOCA award supplements the coordinator’s salary and benefits and that the city will remain responsible for any remaining salary, benefits or training expenses. "We reapplied this fiscal year for fiscal year 2027 and have been awarded $54,773," the presenter said. The staff member said the city has had VOCA funding for several years and that losing the grant is a possibility but not an immediate concern.
Vice mayor Eldridge moved to authorize the renewal; councilman Bocce seconded and the council voted 5-0 to approve. Staff did not provide a detailed breakdown of how the awarded amount fits into the coordinator’s total compensation; council members did ask briefly whether loss of the grant had been a concern in the past and staff said it was possible but the city has historically received the award.
The authorization permits the city manager to execute the renewal with the Office of Criminal Justice Programs; any remaining local funding obligations will be handled in the city’s personnel and operating budgets.
