Montello council forms volunteer ad-hoc committee to plan 175th anniversary

The Montello Common Council voted Aug. 5 to create a volunteer ad-hoc committee to plan the city’s 175th anniversary celebrations. The motion to form the committee was moved by Council member Venise Mugler and seconded by Bill Faulkner; the motion carried.

The committee will include representatives from the mayor’s office, the City Council, the Montello Historic Preservation Society, the Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club, local businesses, tourism, the Catholic, Lutheran and Methodist churches, the Fire Department, the American Legion, Montello Schools and the library. The motion, as recorded in the minutes, did not specify appointment names, meeting schedule, or funding for the committee’s activities.

In addition to forming the ad-hoc committee, the council carried a series of routine motions to approve meeting minutes from prior boards and commissions, including the July 1 council minutes; Special Finance (Aug. 5); License and Ordinance (July 17); Park Board (July 17); Plan Commission (July 22); Public Safety (July 17) and Public Works (July 10). Each motion was recorded as “motion carried” in the minutes; vote tallies were not provided.

Mayor Houdek opened the meeting at 7:00 p.m. and noted several upcoming dates: the primary election on Aug. 13, the Board of Review on Aug. 26, and that the September council meeting will be held Monday, Sept. 9. Council member Lucas Stelter reported that an author visited the library and gave a well-received presentation for children.
