The Portageville Board of Aldermen voted unanimously March 17 to retain the city's pretreatment program after the Missouri Department of Natural Resources offered to take over the program.
Scott Patterson, the city's pretreatment program coordinator, told the council he had received a call from Brad Allen at the Department of Natural Resources offering that agency assume the pretreatment program, which would move authority away from the city. Patterson described the offer and the practical effect of such a transfer; council discussion followed.
Alderman Faulk moved to keep the pretreatment program under the City of Portageville. Alderman Simmons seconded the motion and all members voted in favor.
Why it matters: Local pretreatment programs oversee how industrial and commercial discharges are monitored before they reach the public wastewater system; a transfer to the state would shift operational responsibility and oversight. Council members opted to retain local control and directed no further action beyond the approval to remain responsible for the program.
Votes at a glance: Motion to keep the pretreatment program with the City of Portageville โ mover: Alderman Faulk; seconder: Alderman Simmons; vote: unanimous (Aldermen Mccrate, Faulk, Simmons, Smith voted yes).
