During its June 4 meeting, the Stephens City Town Council heard a police activity update, approved an agreement related to crisis-intervention overtime, and received several administrative updates from the town manager.
Police activity and CITAC: Chief Charles Bockey Jr. reported that "May was a busy month with 113 calls," in addition to house and business checks. He said the Newtown Heritage Festival and the Special Olympics both had strong attendance and no reported issues. Chief Bockey also told the council that officers have completed CITAC training; the training will allow off-duty officers to work overtime under an agreement drafted by the Northwestern Crisis Intervention Team. At the Public Safety Committee's recommendation, Councilwoman Regina Swygert-Smith moved to approve the CITAC agreements and to appoint the chief of police or his designate as the authorized signatory; the motion carried with recorded ayes from Nauman, Bowers, Fravel, Hollis, Swygert-Smith and Thatcher.
Town Manager updates: Town Manager Mike Majher reported the Newtown Heritage Festival was successful and thanked attendees. He said a sinkhole on Estep Road has been repaired by Neff Construction and the town has a new phone system in service. Majher said the yard-waste site is being prepared and is expected to be ready for use July 1; he noted he attended an I&I workshop hosted by VRWA. He also reminded the council that water bills were due June 3 and taxes were mailed with a June 8 due date. Preliminary plans for the remodeling of the old school were received, though the minutes do not include further details.
Calendar and next steps: Mayor Michael Diaz announced special council meetings on June 18 and June 25 at 7 p.m. for public hearings on the fiscal year 2020 budget. With no other business, Councilman Linden Fravel Jr. moved to adjourn at 7:25 p.m.; the motion carried unanimously.
What the record does not show: The minutes do not include copies of the CITAC agreement, the full text of the I&I workshop takeaways, cost or operational details for the yard-waste site, or detailed timelines for remodeling the old school.
