Afton Volunteer Fire Department reports 87 calls in 2024; new equipment and staffing changes noted

Fire Chief Cody Wilkes briefed the council on the Afton Volunteer Fire Department’s 2024 activity and equipment status.
Wilkes said AVFD responded to 87 calls in 2024: 50 fire calls and 37 motor‑vehicle accidents. He reported staffing turnover during the year, including three retirements and one death, and said the department is currently fully staffed with 32 members. Four new members — Cole Thomas, Kysen Hebdon, Kyle Kunz, and Branden McDonald — were recently voted into the department from a field of 12 applicants.
Wilkes listed recent equipment additions including four new automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and new Jaws of Life cutters installed on trucks, noted arrival and installation of a new washer and dryer, and said a new fire truck is scheduled for delivery in May or June 2025. He added that 12 firefighters expressed interest in attending Cody Fire School this May and that the department plans spring improvements at the drill fields, including work on the sprinkler system.
The council received the report; no formal council action was recorded on the fire department update at the meeting.
