Afton council approves street‑improvement payments, authorizes $60,000 for track steer

The Afton Town Council approved several infrastructure payments and equipment authorizations at its Oct. 8 meeting.
Sunrise Engineering representative Dave Kennington presented a request for payment to Vandeburg Excavation, Inc. for the North Afton Project in the amount of $74,881.50; the council approved the payment on a motion by Council Member Dirk Hillyard and a second by Council Member Abby Humes. Kennington also presented the final application for payment to Avail Valley Construction—WY LLC for the Afton 2024 Street Improvements Project for $81,350.10; Council Member Abby Humes moved approval, Council Member Will Wilkes seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
Utility Director Josh Peavler reported the Due West subdivision tie‑in to Highway 89 is complete and said a line repair under the highway is scheduled to start on Oct. 21; Peavler thanked Traeson Hemmert and Todd Larson for assistance and said a request for payment for completed work would be presented in new business. Peavler also requested the council consider purchasing a track steer (blower and snow tracks) using unrestricted general fund reserves to improve snow removal near hydrants. Council Member Michael Butler moved a not‑to‑exceed allocation of $60,000 from the general reserve to purchase a track steer; Council Member Dirk Hillyard seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Public Works Director J.R. Nield reported the town received a bid of $86,500 for a motor grader but noted it would require new snow tires. Nield submitted quotes for tires and the council accepted Commercial Tire’s bid of $13,394.22 on a motion by Council Member Will Wilkes, seconded by Council Member Dirk Hillyard.
All listed payments and equipment authorizations were approved by unanimous vote where recorded; the council scheduled discussion of Swift Creek Road maintenance for the Oct. 22 work session.
