Afton council backs Smart City rollout; mayor abstains over conflict

Council Member Michael Butler moved that the council support Silver Star’s rollout; Council Member Abby Humes seconded the motion and the council approved it. Mayor Jeff Jensen abstained from the vote because of a conflict of interest. The council did not commit town funds at the meeting; the action was a formal endorsement to proceed with the project as Silver Star described it.
The presentation framed the proposal as a public‑private partnership intended to expand downtown connectivity and services. Council members did not ask the town to make an upfront financial contribution at the Oct. 8 meeting; follow‑up steps and any future agreements would require additional staff review and formal approvals.
