Grottoes honors officer for life‑saving CPR; veterans outreach group presents services

Chief Sullivan presented a life‑saving award to Officer McDonough Funk at the May 11 Town of Grottoes council meeting, recounting that on March 18, 2026 Funk arrived at a call where a man was suffering cardiac arrest and "immediately... started to perform CPR until emergency rescue personnel could arrive." Sullivan said the effort helped restore a pulse and the person was transported to RMH.
The mayor thanked Officer Funk for his service, asked for a photograph, and the council publicly recognized the officer.
Later in the meeting, Gabrielle Smart introduced herself as a community outreach case manager with the Staff Sergeant Fox Suicide Prevention Program, told the council the program is grant‑funded by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and operates out of Volunteers of America Chesapeake and Carolinas, and described available assistance including referrals to VA medical centers, food and utility assistance, and transportation help for appointments. Smart said brochures were left with the town and provided a contact number: (703) 844‑7660.
Council thanked Smart and asked staff to distribute the information to the public; no formal action was taken on these items.
