The Town of Southern Shores adopted two personnel policies during its Nov. 12 meeting.
Bonnie, the town’s personnel representative, presented a voluntary shared‑leave policy that allows an employee to request donated leave for themselves or covered family members (spouse, children, parents or dependents living in the household). Bonnie said the form‑based process will route requests through the department head to the town manager for approval and that personnel attorney John Lighty reviewed the policy.
Council voted to approve the voluntary shared‑leave policy on a motion by a council member and a second. Members described the policy as the “right thing to do” and said having a written process ensures consistent treatment across employees.
Bonnie also presented a floating‑holiday policy to give employees one additional floating holiday per fiscal year ("use it or lose it"), bringing the town’s paid holidays in line with neighboring municipalities. Council approved the floating‑holiday policy by voice vote.
Both policies were presented as staff‑prepared items intended to improve consistency in personnel administration and to help the town remain competitive in recruiting.
