Chief Mercillades reported to Plymouth Township Council on July 13 that the department's social-services co-responder program assisted 27 people in June.
Mercillades described two notable cases: one involving an unhoused individual with mental illness who was transported to a hospital, linked to employment supports, provided with a bicycle and phone, and helped access additional services; and a second involving a stranded family from Erie that had been living in a car and was provided temporary lodging, food, and train tickets home with help from the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul and local assistance groups.
"In June, our social services co responder assisted 27 people in need," Chief Mercillades said, noting officers and the co-responder coordinated with partners to secure services. He also said the department hosted a roundtable with local clergy to discuss collaboration between public safety and faith leaders and encouraged community participation at National Night Out, scheduled for Aug. 4 at Community Center Park with details to be posted on the township website.
Councilmembers thanked the chief and staff for their outreach work. Chief Mercillades said the event will likely begin around 5:30 p.m. and that the department will publicize exact timing and details.
