Council schedules April public hearing on partial closure of General Stonewall Jackson Drive

The Town Council voted unanimously on March 2 to call a public hearing for April 6 at 6:30 p.m. on an ordinance to withdraw from dedication a portion of General Stonewall Jackson Drive.
Town Public Works Director Daniel Hendrix told the council a traffic study identified about 32 cars during morning peak times using the segment as a cut-through. Council discussed alternatives such as speed bumps but staff and engineers advised against them for safety reasons given the street configuration and proximity to houses; closing the segment would force vehicles to stop and make turning movements, and could also remove a route used by tractor trailers.
Council Member Brendan Sweeney moved to call the public hearing; Council Member Corey Kelly seconded and the motion passed 5–0. The hearing will give residents an opportunity to comment before council considers an ordinance to formally close the portion of the street.
