Redevelopment panel raises workforce grant to $50,000 and approves Maryville scope change

The Hobart Redevelopment Commission voted March 16 to increase its 2027 education and workforce training grant allocation from $30,000 to $50,000 and approved a scope change for a Maryville construction-trades project.

Miguel, who gave the board the update, said the additional funds will expand available support for education and workforce training programs. The motion to raise the grant amount passed on a voice vote.

The commission also considered a letter from Terrell Taylor, construction-trades instructor at Maryville High School, describing a revision to a previously approved grant project. The project will move away from installing eight outdoor food-pantry boxes and instead have students design and build eight indoor multipurpose distribution cabinets—one for each Maryville community school. The letter, read at the meeting, said the indoor units will better protect donated goods from winter weather, vandalism and spoilage while offering a service-learning opportunity for students.

A presenter at the meeting noted the revised approach preserves the original project budget and said the change reduces liability and allows school staff to manage distributions. Commissioners had no substantive objections and approved the scope revision by voice vote.

The commission recorded the approvals as part of its routine consent and grant-management work. Staff said the Maryville project will proceed within the previously approved budget and that the revised design includes storage for food, clothing and personal-hygiene items.
