Fire Chief Steve Rockwell told the Stoddard Selectboard on May 27 that the fire station roof needs replacement and that a roofer told him the roof was "doomed to fail," presenting a $21,000 quote for the work. Board members said the Emergency Capital Reserve Fund is intended for unexpected damage rather than routine maintenance and asked the chief to obtain at least two additional quotes before moving forward.
Chief Rockwell said an equipment inspection is pending and he was unsure of final replacement or inspection costs; the board asked for a copy of any inspection contract and the chief agreed to provide a contact person to Town Administrator Michelle Pong so staff could obtain the contract for yearly inspections.
The chief also asked the board to approve a $13,145 quote from Fire Matic for a dryer and extractor. Town Administrator Michelle Pong said she would work with the Treasurer to split invoicing so part of the expense posts to the current fiscal year and part to the next fiscal year to align with how the appropriation was approved at Town Meeting. Rockwell said expected plumbing work related to the new equipment would occur in the next fiscal year.
Chair Terri LaRoche and Board Member Jason Kovarik emphasized the need for additional quotes for the roof rather than drawing on the Emergency Reserve for routine maintenance. Chief Rockwell agreed to obtain further estimates and provide additional documentation for inspection services and contracts.
