Cultural tourism report: officials say more than 678 artists worked with programs, museum visits top 36,000

Molly Jarvis, the Cultural Tourism representative, told the Culture Committee the department has engaged more than 678 artists across programs including the Artist Recovery Act, art bids, museum initiatives and art shows.
Jarvis said a recent hospital art installation and several art shows significantly increased participation and that "we have had more than 36,000 guests come through our properties this year," counting museum and site tours since October. She credited the hospital bid with a substantial portion of the increase.
The department is advancing several exhibitions and openings: the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch is planned to open in the fall; the Ani Art Center in Stillwell is scheduled to open Aug. 11 at 11 a.m.; a homecoming art show will have a reception on Aug. 7 with the exhibition running Aug. 8–Sept. 12; and traditional games and demonstrations are set for July 17 and July 21 at the National History Museum in downtown Tahlequah and at Sequoia's Cabin and Celine Courthouse.
Jarvis also noted that the department includes some non‑Cherokee participants in events such as the Cherokee Art Market, but that the majority of artists served are Cherokee. She named Ron Mitchell as the treasurer featured at the Celine Courthouse Museum during the reporting period.
Committee members asked follow-up questions about tours of facilities and opportunities for councilors to visit the Awny Arc Center; Jarvis said staff are working to schedule a council tour. The chair thanked Jarvis and moved on to the next agenda item.
The Culture Committee received the report with no formal action requested; the committee's next meeting was tentatively scheduled for Aug. 10 at 11 a.m.
