Ware County approves airport safety work, runway design and several construction contracts

The board approved Work Order 25-15 with Passero Associates, LLC to study and remove tree obstructions at the county airport after county officials said the Georgia Department of Transportation cited the airport for trees penetrating the glide path and warned federal funding could be jeopardized if obstructions were not addressed. Commissioner Leonard Burse moved the measure; the motion passed on a roll-call vote with Commissioners Burse, Tindall, Cox and Chairman Elmer Thrift voting aye (Commissioner Timmy Lucas absent). County Manager James Shubert said some trees might be trimmed rather than removed depending on their location.
The board also approved Work Order 25-12 with Passero Associates for design services to rehabilitate Runway 1/19. Commissioner Jon Tindall said the total design cost is $137,516 and that Ware County's share of the project is 2.5%, approximately $3,700. The design approval is a preliminary step; further design and construction phases will require additional approvals and funding.
For county facilities, commissioners authorized a $16,994.93 electrical contract with Carter Electric for the Emergency Management Agency storage building. Commissioner Jon Tindall highlighted the commission's preference for hiring local contractors when feasible.
Separately, the board awarded the 2023 Local Funds Phase 2 bid to The Scruggs Company for $657,638.57. That project award passed on a unanimous roll-call vote among present commissioners.
All contract votes were recorded by roll call; the minutes show no questions or objections beyond logistical clarifications and brief praise for local contractors.
Next steps recorded in the minutes: staff will proceed with contracting under the approved work orders and bids; the runway rehabilitation design will proceed under Work Order 25-12 but additional funding and approvals will be required for later phases.
