Muscoda board hears inconsistent BOD test results from Fairfield Specialty Eggs; staff to continue sampling

Village engineer reported that Fairfield Specialty Eggs’ internal piping changes reduced discharge volume but produced inconsistent biological oxygen demand (BOD) test results; samples have not exceeded lagoon permit limits and village staff will continue monitoring.
Muscoda’s village engineer told trustees on Sept. 10 that Fairfield Specialty Eggs reconstructed internal piping on June 29 and that the plant’s discharge volume has fallen since the change, but BOD test results have been inconsistent.
Delta 3 Engineer Bart Nies said samples sometimes show very high BOD values and other samples do not. He told the board that one possible explanation is that the sampling location lacks sufficient domestic flow for dilution. Nies said, however, that even the high BOD readings have not caused Muscoda to exceed its lagoon permit limits.
Administrator/Superintendent Wardell has taken samples from a different location but the results had not been received at the time of the meeting. Trustees directed Wardell to continue sampling and monitoring and to report results to the board.
The board did not report any formal enforcement action at the meeting; discussion focused on further sampling and monitoring to determine whether treatment or operational changes are needed.
