The Cherokee Nation Community Services Committee on Monday voted to approve a resolution authorizing submission of the fiscal year 2027 Indian Housing Plan to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Councilor Pat Skalski moved the resolution, and the committee carried the motion after a brief clarification on program details.
The resolution authorizes staff to submit the nation’s FY2027 Indian Housing Plan to HUD, a necessary procedural step to secure federal housing resources and to continue federally supported housing programs. Councilor Sasha Black Fox Qualls asked specifically about the tribal emergency program referenced in the plan and whether it continues to cover elder emergencies, driveway repairs and storm shelters.
Jerry Keller of the housing department confirmed that driveway repairs remain an active, eligible item under the tribal emergency program and that residents with driveway issues may apply. "Driveways are an active thing. You can still apply for driveways now," Keller said. Black Fox Qualls stated she supports the resolution and asked to be added as a sponsor.
The chair called the question and the motion carried. The committee set no additional conditions during the vote. The committee tentatively scheduled its next meeting for Monday, Aug. 10 at 4 p.m.
The outcome advances the administration’s ability to submit required federal documentation and request HUD resources for housing programs described in the plan.
