Budget committee appoints Walter Mitchell to fill vacant seat

Mitchell, a 35-year Gilmanton resident and longtime municipal lawyer for the town, spoke to his experience and said he would work to balance taxpayer affordability with community needs. Joshua Mann, who identified himself as a former vice chair of the committee and a past chair of a larger municipal budget committee, also addressed the panel as the other candidate.
School Board Representative Laura Gerard moved to nominate Mitchell; Sawyer Lake Village District Representative David Ferber seconded. Selectmen Representative Brian Forst noted the practical value of resident outreach and public information when considering candidates. After the vote, Town Clerk/Tax Collector Elise Smith swore Mitchell in and he took his seat for the remainder of the meeting.
The appointment fills a one-year term; committee members noted that major budget work is not expected until the fall. The committee discussed both candidates' willingness to serve longer terms if asked.
