Nelson Select Board hears updates on culverts, dry hydrant and boat ramp; agrees to continue leaf-clearing work

M. Tarr told the Nelson Select Board the Highway Department has a repair bill request for a complete rebuild of the rear suspension on a Peterbilt truck and raised concerns about leaf clearing and drainage. Selectman Don Carlisle questioned whether extensive leaf clearing justified the time, but Tarr said keeping ditches and culverts clear prevents overflow and washouts; the board agreed the effort should continue.

J. Pepin submitted photos showing culvert deterioration on West Shore Road, which the board discussed as part of the highway update. Tarr said the Dry Hydrant project is awaiting a further lowering of water levels so parts can be welded and transported; he will contact B. Roeder to determine the final low-water point. Tarr also reported the town’s boat ramp is exposed and repairs can start now. The Highway Equipment Committee meeting was rescheduled after low attendance; the town plans to pursue a loader for 2025.

The board did not take a formal vote on the Peterbilt repair at this meeting but discussed several maintenance priorities and scheduling for repairs and equipment acquisition.
