Nelson police chief outlines equipment checks, training and seasonal scheduling changes

Police Chief J. Filipi gave the Select Board a routine departmental update at the Sept. 18 meeting.
Filipi told the board the 2014 cruiser is serviceable and will receive an additional transmission flush at a later time rather than being retired immediately. New department uniforms are in process. He said the department is monitoring a complaint about excessive junk cars and is maintaining regular contact with the property owner to ensure compliance with local regulations.
Filipi said he is considering enrolling in a 40-hour firearms course to qualify as a training officer; he said his part-time department would provide the equipment for any training he conducts, which he framed as a way to assist neighboring towns with their annual firearms certification. He also said the department will make daily adjustments to the duty schedule as summer population and activity decrease heading into fall and winter.
On equipment and technology, Filipi said he is working with the town’s IT service provider on the police department’s computer needs and is reviewing the current security-camera system for efficiency; he said a cell-phone booster for a new cruiser is being considered to improve cellular service in remote areas. No vote or formal action was taken on these operational items at the meeting.
