The Broken Arrow Board of Education voted unanimously to approve an emergency declaration to replace classroom furniture damaged by a June 23 storm that exposed a failed roof drain at a school site.
Director of operations Mr. Rice told the board the storm flooded five classrooms and two offices, that disaster-restoration vendors had been engaged and that some furniture pieces were swelling and failing. He said the district sought to expedite replacement so classrooms would be ready before school starts. "Our threshold for insurance is $100,000. This is going to be right around that range," he said, explaining staff had consulted legal counsel and were advised to proceed with an emergency authorization rather than filing an insurance claim in this case.
The board moved and seconded the motion and approved it by roll call: Missus Taylor, Doctor Williams, Doctor Roulette, Mister Cockerell and Mister Allen voted yes.
Staff said restoration and replacement work would proceed immediately under the emergency declaration and that further reporting on costs and any insurance decisions will be brought back to the board as required.
